Arthur Athanassiou may not need much introduction! He started dancing at Rio Rhythmics 18 years ago and went from enthusiastic student to much loved teacher. He now lives in Sydney, but we were so delighted to run into him at the Woodford Folk Festival in December last year.
After all this time he says his “light bulb” moment came when “.. in a beginners zouk class I was told to put some swing into my hips after the third beat – it just clicked – things fell into place – it was like my eyes were opened for the first time”.
Accomplished in many styles, Arthur fell in love with Tango, which he taught at Rio Rhythmics up until a couple of years ago.
In his usual cheeky manner, he had this advice for beginners. “Remember all advanced dancers started like you – except for me – I was always awesome – everyone else started as beginners!”
Arthur is still dancing and pines for the variety of dance styles Brisbane has to offer.
