The Evans Family’s Dance Story
In 2016 we started a project called “Tell Your Dance Story” to share just some of the transformations, achievements and accomplishments of our Rio Rhythmics members.
After enjoying a few ballroom classes on a cruise, we thought we would see if we could find a dance form we could all enjoy at home. After much internet searching and a recommendation we thought a starters course would probably be all we would need. What we weren’t’ expecting was how interesting Brazilian dance is or the variety of dance styles, most of which we had never heard of. We now prefer this to ballroom dancing, which Guy and I did about 30 years ago.
We have discovered a studio with such engaging, knowledgeable, helpful and funny dance teachers, who ensure we feel challenged, but not over whelmed at each class. We always come away feeling like we have achieved something new and keen to learn more. What we weren’t expecting was to discover a community of lovely people, all of whom love to dance! We now attend amazing dance parties most Friday and Saturday nights. We have met so many people, who are all so friendly.
Classes at Rio Rhythmics appeal to all ages, from 18 to over 60. Our two young adult children have become part of a community that encompasses everyone. They now prefer to go dancing than frequenting the night clubs. Did you know there are regular Brazilian dance parties around Brisbane, we didn’t?
Starting classes gave the family something to do together. It changed the relationship between Chris and Sarah, who have moved on from annoying sibling rivalry to a close adult friendship. They have learnt at a rapid rate and even joined the Student Support Team and Student Display Team. We have been dancing at RR for 18 mths now, and will continue next year.
We discovered West End, with it very quaint atmosphere, little restaurants, quirky pubs and food markets. After years of running children around to sport and ballet classes, we have rediscovered the fun we use to have time for – before kids! We can now have a meal, visit a pub and go for a dance – life is good!
